Shopping in Egypt – The Rough Guide to Survival

If you hate shopping … you really hate shopping in Egypt. Forget browser window because there is not there. The forced sale is a way of seeing things, a fully interactive shopping experience is another.

That magic bazaar is, of course, the art of bargaining, and the type of person you are or you send it to orgasmic heights or fear of shopping wallet so far from your pants you have difficulty using this wad of currency notes again.

For my part I'm too cool to bargain effectively, but my wife has no such scruples and would gladly barter, procrastination and emotionally manipulate vendors until we left with a treasure Mine deals for the price others have paid for a postcard. This may sound terrible, but I assure you, they love to haggle in Egypt. A seller Egyptian street that bargain is like selling U.S. does not say "Have a nice day" or the clerk British forgets a face. Am I being stereotypical? I'm sure. But where are the stereotypes? Well, in the case of haggling, they come from Egypt. And who better to haggle with tourists the ruthless capitalists of the West?

A wide range of products are available from Egypt, the largest of these courses; trinkets based on ancient monuments, spices (although this is not always what they seem to be), gold and cotton. All these items are available at a price that is never quite clear to you. You will not find a price tag and if you ask how you would normally be given a price that is double what you'll end up paying for this … If you bargain that is. Shopping in Egypt is an art, a delicate process in several steps that can lead to the satisfaction of buying or extreme dysfunction of the brain.

The first thing you should do when you enter a shop or a vendor approach Egypt is not to act surprised when they correctly guess your nationality. You stick like a sore thumb and there have been innumerable herds before you who have was prepared by starting with a small fortune based on conversation starters as innocent, "the lovely people … (Insert Nationality) … not like insert nationality (not yours) … As I do them. Now, I do not mean that you do not communicate and clams … far from it. Egyptian people is warm and welcoming and I highly recommend you take advantage of these conversations. Be aware that your custom is being courted as a gentleman of the court would be a lady of fashion, the most charming, can often be more persuasive. You must constantly remind you that you are not the best of friends … you are engaged in a preamble to a sale.

One of the nice things about shopping in Egypt is that you will be offered a cup of tea Hibiscus almost everywhere you go. This refreshing blend background is an acquired taste, but you will at least be able to tell everyone at home that you "do as the locals and had tea with a nice Egyptian man. The tea is doubly pleasing because temperatures further south in Egypt regularly top 40 degrees centigrade. Remember … all that tea has to go somewhere. If you plan to make a toilet stop while in Egypt, make sure you have fabrics by hand or a few notes of local currency to pay for toilet paper roll to another native entrepreneurs. At no free lunch in this world?

Back to shopping … and if you're interested in an item, do not you are. This may seem obvious, but indifference is pulling harder it seems. Once you have mastered sound indifferent, you're halfway to a successful bargainer. One side successfully indifferent lead to a cascade of falling prices … but when to stop?

When you hear "I have children to feed animal, you know you get a reasonably good agreement. It's like a poker game in many respects, do not show your hand too early or you will lose. Which brings me to another important point … does not produce a portfolio with ripe notes. Not only is there a risk (pickpockets are common in markets animated), you risk insulting the seller that you have bargained down to the bone.

It is also interesting to note that in hot spots tourism along the Nile, especially in official government stores, goods are generally much more expensive than in the Red Sea resorts. If you are planning a trip to the Red Sea coast, many, if not all products (including those linked to ancient Egypt) are available at points from there. In El Gouna, for example, you will find things like jewelry and fragrances are available at a fraction of the cost you will pay in Luxor or Cairo.

At the end of the day, but a good buy is something you want at a price that you believe is fair. Haggle politely haggle so responsible and you can find stores in Egypt, a fund of experience can not buy. You can not bargain for it.
